well, not 97 but more recent...8/18/2010

It starts flying @2:44 in and by 11min in, some of the finest jamming I have EVER heard from any band. One would have to be deaf and souless not to be able to hear the intense nusical interplay and connection with the audience. Shut off yer internal dialouge and listen, tho your soul's a critic, no. ;)

Sure there are inane lyric's - its about Harry, their milkman...but so wtf?? LISTEN!

I grew up in Vermont and started watching Phish at their outset at Nectars and other venues/parties around Vermont in the 80s. I and my friends knew that they were going places right from the start. Lots of great memories. I also saw over thirty Dead shows and a bunch of Jerry shows starting from my senior year in high school in 83. That said, The Grateful Dead do it for me in a way that Phish doesn't. But that's just me.

This debate here is a bit ridiculous. Music is not a competition. Art is not a competition. Members of both bands dedicate their lives to their craft. They are artists. There ain't no winners in the game. If you really think there are, answer me this? Who's better, Vincent Van Gogh or Salvador Dali? And can you convince an aficionado of one that the other is really better? It's art people. Art.

And by the way, Harry is not about their milkman. It's about Harry Hood, the animated character on the Hood ice cream commercials who lives in your freezer. ''Harry, Harry! Where do you go when the lights go out?''

Yes, but there is such a thing a shitty art. Just because you are an artist does not mean you are entitled to be considered on the same plain as other truly great artist.

Your right, its not a competition, its a comparison. The comparison I was making was more of a comment regarding the lyrics more than anything, which you have totally avoided.

I just saw this this morning and had to respond seeing as how I am the meatstick who started it all a few days ago.

Can I convince one aficinado that one is truly better than the other? Hell yes I can. You are using the analogy of Van Gogh and Dali...Come ON man. GD is to Van Gogh as Phish is to Dali....No way? Or even vice-versa it is ridiculous to even say that.....Now, if you were to say GD is to Van Gogh as Phish is to Warhol or some other pop artist, I MIGHT be able to buy that.

What is a bit ridiculous imo, is to be so narcissistic as to call out anyone who makes the comparison between the two, while making nonsensical comparisons yourself. It's one gigantic contradiction. Winning has nothing to do with it.

It's about common sense Mark. Common sense.

You seem eager to argue about this for some reason. Name-calling does not advance your case. What I am saying is that there is no argument.

Contemplate this nugget of common sense, common wisdom, common knowledge for a moment.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, Skobud, you are. I'm tired of this silliness.

Grab a beer and crank up the music you love.

Find a CD of Phish's "A LIVE ONE" then play it on a high end sound system at concert level. Thats what I do with any band to test the waters.

I haven't looked but you may be able to DL it from The Pirate Bay (since you u don't like them anyway).

I give a lot of credence to the fact that in the late 80's, early 90's they where the GD's "competition" and the resulting jealousies. I heard "Phish SUCKS!" from a lot of knuckleheads. A lot of us "oldies" don't want to admit it, but it's a generational thing too. A person who likes their music and jams can see the soul and beauty in a lot of their music. There were many times that I heard the music play the band and a definite band/fan connection.

oh, the humanity! - you're welcome, clones ;)

Hand down, Van Gogh.

BTW, Pablo Picasso was an asshole.

i agree....phish are very talented in their craft...for thoes who compare the dead and phish are not listening...two completely diffrent styles....yes the they have jazz/blues...ect.....but they are just two diff...how can one say phish have no soul?...I am a huge DH but also a huge music fan and touring musician that apprciates good music,,,no one is better than or worse than....just diffrent....

I agree and if you read my initial post that started all of this you will see I was not comparing. I was commenting on how ridiculous I think their lyrics are and that is why I find them unlistenable.

Sko, whats not to like if you're a cosmic-big black furry creature from Mars?? lol.

I really don't pay much attention to their lyric's or fret over the lyric's. It's the incredible jams I've witnessed that I really-really enjoy. I suspend my internal dialogue and simply enjoy the here and now, as I do at any show.

Their presence and prowess is hard to convey on teeny PC speakers. Of course they and the GD had stinker shows and songs, but being there live, at a top show, certainly rocks my world.

Well, different strokes for different folks. Peace brother!

I hear you rasta. Its just so many people are reading into this waay too much. I gave my opinion on why i think new jam bands arent taken seriously - their lyrics. That was all I was trying to say. I never said they couldnt play or sell out huge arenas. I said my opinion was that they suck and so do their lyrics.

Im not speaking for anyone else but myself - and I certainly am not trying to speak for the band(GD that is).

I was actually suprised to see how many passive agressive responses I got and that it was still going as of late last night. Since I started it all, I kept responding. Im not pissed or trying to troll, Im just defending my point. I think its been made though, and I will stop here.

sounds like empty fusion jazz wanking to me...not even close to the "intensity" of a really great GD jam like the DS from 3/23/72 or the LIG from 7/28/82...but that is the big diff between ecstacy and LSD...intensity. One smooths out the unsettling edges of reality the other accentuates them.

The Dead could play it so it scared the crap out of you it was so good, the universe coming apart at the seams and you caught in the middle. Nothing like that happening there. Just pretty music. Glad the Grateful Dead were so much more or we wouldn't be here talking about any of this.

Nice light show though. Perfectly fine musicianship. But there is way more to this game than that...
